University Choir / Chamber Choir
University Choir
The University Choir includes students from all university courses of the University of Music Lübeck. The repertoire of the choir includes a-cappella - literature of the 16th century to the symphonic choral works of the 20th century. The choir is also open to new experimental music – thus the last programme was almost totally made up of choral improvisations. In the winter semester the choir, together with trombones and organ, will perform music of the early Baroque period in the Lübeck Cathedral. Since 2005, the choir has been led by Johannes Schymalla, Cathedral Cantor in Stendal. He has studied Church Music and School Music in Berlin and Lübeck, Organ with Jürgen Essl and Arvid Gast and also Choir and Orchestra Conducting with Gerd Müller-Lorenz.
Chamber Choir of the University of Music Lübeck
Depending on the programme and epoch, this vocal ensemble consists of approximately 16 to 32 singers. Students take part who, over and above the commitments of their study courses, are interested in ensemble singing, in artistic challenges with regard to quality and can offer both high vocal ability and a wide stylistic spectrum. Particular highlights of the past years have been, amongst many others, concert tours, participation in the Brahms Festival of the University of Music Lübeck and choral symphonic performances, often with soloist roles.
The musical spectrum of the choir, which was formed in 1996 by Gerd Müller, spans the period from the 15th to the 21st century; from Josquin Desprez to debut performances of the present day. Works which are seldom heard or require particular virtuosity have been performed with great success e.g. Strawinski's "Les Noces“. Commitment , a willingness to rehearse intensely and an ability to show initiative are essential for choir members and crucial for the atmosphere, vibrancy and success of this joint effort. Auditions are held to determine whether candidates have the skills required to participate.
