Entrance Audition
Requirements of the Entrance Audition for Instrumentalists
Main Field of Study
Those wishing to take an instrumental main subject should perform at least three works from various style epochs (one of which was composed after 1920), which reveal the ability to interpret and the technical skills of the applicant. The works listed below are not compulsory pieces but serve as examples of the required degree of difficulty. Advanced students are required to perform more difficult works according to the length of their studies.
Piano
Bach: Italian Concerto, Mozart: Sonata in C major KV 330, Beethoven: Sonata op. 10 No. 3, Schumann: Papillons, Brahms: Intermezzi, Ravel: Sonatine, Bartók: Microcosmos book 6, Weber: Variations op. 27.
Organ
Buxtehude: Prelude in G minor BuxWV 149, Bach: Prelude and Fugue in G major BWV 541, Sonata No. 4 in E minor BWV 528, C. Frank: Choral No. 2 in B minor, Hindemith: Sonata No. 1, piano requirements correspond to those for instrumental piano as a main field of study.
Harpsichord
Frescobaldi: Toccata, Bach: Italian Concerto, Scarlatti: Sonata, Henze: Six Absences, piano requirements correspond to those for instrumental piano as a main field of study.
Harp
Nadermann: Sonata No. 1, baroque or contemporary composition, piano requirements correspond to those for instrumental piano as a main field of study.
Guitar
Bach: Suite movement, Villa-Lobos: Preludes, Dowland: Dances, Etudes by Sor or Carassi.
Violin
Etudes by Kreutzer, Rode, Mozart KV 216, 218 or 219, Campagnoli, Rode J. S. Bach: Solo Sonata.
Viola
Stamitz: Concerto; Hoffmeister: Concerto; Bach: Suite No. 2 or No. 3; Etudes by Kreutzer, Campagnoli, Rode.
Violoncello
Haydn: Concerto in C major, Saint-Saens: Concerto in A minor, Elgar: Concerto in E minor, Bach: Suite in D minor, C major, Prelude in E flat major, Sarabande, Gigue
Double bass
De Fesch, Dragonetti, Cappucci, Etudes by Hrabré or Storch.
Flute
Händel: Sonata in G major, Stamitz: Concerto in G major, Hindemith: Eight Pieces.
Recorder
Frescobaldi: Canzones, Telemann: Sonata in F major, Bornefeld: Suites, Linde: Music for a Bird.
Oboe
One of 12 solo-fantasies from Telemann (memorized if possible): 2 other pieces of your own choice (no etude)
Clarinet
Stamitz: Concerto in B major, Weber: Concertino or Concertos.
Bassoon
Vivaldi: Concerto in A minor, J. Ch. Bach: Concerto in E flat major, Fasch: Sonata, Etudes by Milde or Weissenborn op. 8, book 2.
Horn
Mozart: Concerto No. 3, two etudes of different character.
Trumpet
Haydn: Concerto, Hindmith: Sonata, two etudes of different character.
Trombone
Paudert: Aria, Hindemith: Sonata, two etudes of different character.
Tuba
Two etudes of different character.
Drums and percussion
Two etudes for tamburones by Keune or Krüger.
Percussion
Two etudes for snare drum by Keune, Knauer or Wagner. Etude on the xylophone, vibraphone or marimba phone of applicant's own choice (preferably with 4 mallets). Advanced students are required to perform more difficult works - according to the length of their studies.
Piano as a compulsory subject (not if the main field of study is accordion)
Performance of two piano pieces of different character and of medium degree of difficulty
Music theory (written and practical)
Basic knowledge of major and minor harmonies, knowledge of form principles and genres, performance of cadences.
Aural Training (written)
Understanding of intervals, chords, correlation between rhythm and harmony, musical dictation of one and two voices.
