Entrance Audition
Requirements of the Entrance Audition for Church Music
Organ as a main field of study
Performance of 3 to 4 works (one free and one chorale work by J.S. Bach, one from a pre-Bach epoch and one from a post-Bach epoch), sight-playing of less demanding works, chorale playing and chorale improvisation.
Piano as a compulsory subject
Performance of 2 to 3 works (by Bach e.g. Prelude and Fugue from the "Well-Tempered Clavier", one classical sonata and one romantic or newer piano piece)
Singing as a compulsory subject
Performance of a religious song with accompaniment (e.g. Bach, Schemelli) or a less demanding song (e.g. by Telemann, Schubert or Schumann) as well as a hymn without accompaniment.
Music Theory
(written and practical) Knowledge of general music theory and harmony (including thorough bass), playing of extended cadences.
Aural Training
(written)Understanding of intervals, chords, correlation between rhythm and harmony, musical dictation of one and two voices.
Music History
(written) General overview of style epochs and genres, composers and their major works; recognition and classification of a short work excerpt by ear from a recording (with regard to style, form, instrumentation, rhythm etc.).
