Entrance Audition
Requirements of the Entrance Audition for School Music
Artistic Main Field of Study
Performance of at least three works from various style epochs (thorough bass period, classical/romantic period, New Music) which reveal the ability to interpret and the technical skills of the applicant. Sight-playing of a less demanding piece.
Singing as a main field of study: performance of at least four works from various style epochs.
Piano (if Piano is not a main field of study)
Performance of two to three pieces of a medium grade of difficulty and from various style epochs. Examples of the level of difficulty:
Bach: Prelude and Fugue in G major from the "Well-tempered Clavier" Part 1.
A Classical or Romantic piano piece such as Mozart: Sonata KV 545.
Bartók: Microcosmos IV/V.
Sight-playing of a less demanding piece.
Singing (if Singing is not the main field of study)
Performance of a vocal composition of the applicant's own choice (German art song, chorale, song, chanson, spiritual)
Piano Playing for practical school situations
Performance of some German Art Songs which have been prepared for the audition with own accompaniment.
Performance of the applicant's own arrangement from the field of Rock/Pop/Jazz /Improvisation.
Speaking
Performance of a prepared prose text or a poem of the applicant's own choice.
Speaking Test
An identification of applicant's ability to reflect and verbalise by means of a talk on:
the reasons for the choice of school musician as a profession,
conception of the professional career and tasks of a music pedagogue,
views regarding current music instruction in schools,
ideas on future goals to strive after in music education in schools,
reflections on the activities of teachers and pupils in the group test which has been previously carried out (see below).
Group Test (at the beginning of the first day of the entrance audition, together with the other applicants for each audition day, and students of the University of Music)
School-oriented role plays, behaviour in other enacted social situations, interaction games, organisation of a game, rehearsal of a piece of music (or an excerpt of a piece): prepared instruction of a learning group lasting 10-15 minutes (body percussion, game with physical activity, dance, instrumental movement, or similar of applicant's own choice. The applicant should bring a prepared task and any materials which may be required for the learning group).
Music Theory and Aural Training
written:
musical dictation of one and two voices,
interval and chord identification,
thorough bass task,
cadences.
practical:
playing of cadences,
Musical History (written),
general overview of style epochs and genres, composers and their most significant works; recognition and classification of a short work excerpt by ear from a recording (regarding style, form, instrumentation, rhythm etc.).
