General Information

• It is expected that the programme for the aptitude test is one of upmost difficulty.
• The programme must include works from different eras, including from the 20th and 21st century.
• The performance of the repertoire must take at least 90 minutes (60 minutes for organists, chamber music ensembles and singers).
• In general, works should be performed in completeness; single movements are not desired.

Main subject

• Preselection is done on the basis of videos that must be submitted. The contentual and formal requirements for those can be found below.

Main subject composition

• Portfolio: submission of a portfolio with three to four full scores which show the variety of the artist.
• The recordings of the submitted works must be uploaded to the video portal.
• Letter of motivation: explain your motivation for your application and your desire for studying.
• Why do you want to study composition in Lübeck (max. 2,000 characters)
• Where do you see yourself in five years?
• Must be submitted before the application deadline.

The video must be uploaded before the application deadline: before that, please send in your application via the online application portal.

In the video, the applicant must be clearly recognisable. No technical editing is allowed within a performed work. The video should not be older than 6 months. Piano accompaniment is optional. Works performed in the video can also be part of the repertoire for the in-person aptitude test.

The following requirements apply

• Works or parts of work which show the technical and interpretational skills as well as stylistic variety
• Video length: at least 30 minutes.
• Please put significant timestamps between the works or the parts of the video.

The following overview provides examples of works that could be performed during the aptitude test in the respective major subject. This is not a compulsory programme.

 

Piano

• Bach: Italian Concerto

Harp

• Three works from different eras, for example by Nadermann, Dussek, Andres or Handel
• Etudes by Bochsa, Pozzoli or Dizzi

Guitar

• Bach: Suite set
• Villa-Lobos: Preludes
• Dowland: Dances,
• Etudes by Sor or Carassi

Violin

• First movement of a violin concerto,
• plus 2 works or individual movements (no études) from 2 other eras
• Programme duration at least 20 minutes

Viola

• Stamitz: Concerto
• Hoffmeister: Concerto
• Bach: 2nd or 3rd Suite
• Études by Kreutzer, Campagnoli or Rode

Violoncello

• First movement of a cello concerto,
• plus 2 works or individual movements (no études) from 2 other periods.
• Programme duration: at least 20 minutes.

Double bass

• De Fesch, Dragonetti, Cappucci, études by Hrabré or Storch

Flute

• Handel: Sonata in G major
• Stamitz: Concerto in G major
• Hindemith: Eight Pieces

Oboe

• One of Telemann's 12 solo fantasies (preferably memorised)
• Two additional works of your choice (no études)

Clarinet

• Carl Stamitz: Concerto in B flat major
• Weber: Concertino or Concertos
• Hindemith

Saxophone

• One original composition from the traditional saxophone repertoire (at least as difficult as P. Maurice, Tableaux de Provence)
• A composition in contemporary musical language

Bassoon

• Vivaldi: Concerto in A minor
• Johann Christoph Bach: Concerto in E flat major
• Fasch: Sonata
• Etudes by Milde or Weissenborn op. 8, Book 2

Horn

• Mozart: Concerto No. 3
• Strauss: Concerto No. 1

Trumpet

Trombone

Timpani and percussion

• Études for 2-4 timpani, for example Knauer, Krüger, Zegalski, Delecluse or Keune
• Etudes for snare drum from the schools of Knauer, Krüger, Delecuse, Wagner or Keune
• Etudes for xylophone (e.g. Goldenberg) and/or 2 movements from a cello suite by Bach
• Telemann: Fantasies for flute or violin (on marimba)
• Solo work for marimba or vibraphone (4 mallets preferred)
• All areas (timpani, snare drum and mallets) must be covered
• For higher semesters, more difficult works are required in accordance with the duration of study (including set-up pieces: for example, by Xenakis, Volans, Globokar, etc.)
