Lecturers

  • Gesine Dreyer (harp) studied harp at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Prof. Julie Raines and Prof. Maria Graf. She completed master classes with Susanna Mildonian and Ursula Holliger. After a temporary contract with the Frankfurt Opera House and Museum Orchestra, she was principal harpist of the Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra from 1994 to 2001. Since then she has lived with her family in Hamburg and works both as a teacher and as a freelance harpist. She holds an honorary professorship at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin and teaches the harp class at the MHL. Her pupils and students have won prizes at national and international competitions, including the national competition "Jugend musiziert" and competitions in Szeged, Porto and Wales. They perform in state youth orchestras and the national orchestra as well as the SHMF and EUY orchestras. Her orchestral engagements regularly take Gesine Dreyer to the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Ensemble Resonanz, the Hamburg State Opera and other renowned orchestras. She also performs as a chamber musician, among others with her colleagues at the MHL.

  • Manja Smits (harp) became the first harpist to receive the Netherlands Music Prize, the highest state award for classical music in the Netherlands. She also was a prizewinner in the ‘Torneo Internazionale di Musica’ in Rome. (1998) After her studies in the Netherlands she was granted a special scholarship from the Dutch Government to perfection her art with Prof. Vera Dulova at the Tschaikovski Conservatory in Moscow. She attended masterclasses with Pierre Jamet, Susann McDonald, Andrew-Lawrence King and Germaine Lorenzini. Her repertoire ranges from Bach to Berio. She appeared on radio and television and is regularly invited to perform in festivals all over the world such as: the International Harp Festival in Fukui (Japan), the Rio Harp Festival (Brazil), Harpe Diem (Belgium), the Spring Harp days in Szeged (Hungary), the World Harp Congress, Peter de Grote Festival, Vienna Harp Days. Also contemporary music has her special attention. She performed at the Berio ConSequenze Festival, the Gubaidulina Festival, the Holland Festival, the Flemish Chambermusic Festival (Belgium) and the 4th Festival ‘Harp Art of Russia’ (Moscow). Several dutch composers dedicated new works for harp to her. As a soloist she performed with a.o. Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam, the three dutch Radio Orchestra’s, the Gelders Orkest, Ensemble XXI (Moscow), Northwest Sinfonietta (USA), the London Festival Strings and Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss. She founded the Renoir Ensemble (flute, stringtrio, harp), The Holland Harp Trio (flute, viola, harp), Les Quatre (violin, violoncello, harp, piano) and regularly appears in duo combinations. Amongst others she recorded French chamber music with the Renoir Ensemble, the CD "Mobile" with oboist Pauline Oostenrijk, "A l‘espagnole" with the Ensemble Les Quatre, "Music for Flute and Harp" with Maurice Heugen and her solo CD appeared on the Vanguard Classics label. After a period as solo-harpist of the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague she decided to concentrate on her solo-career, chamber music and coaching of young harpists. Manja is a passionate educator and shares her musicianship with her students at the ArtEZ Conservatoire of Music in Zwolle, the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen and the Muziekpakhuis in Amsterdam. From her profound wish to share the beauty of music with younger generations, she founded in 2008 the annual Harp Summer Masterclass in la Roche sur Foron, Haute-Savoie, France. She is regularly invited for masterclasses and as a juror in national and international competitions. Manja Smits is a member of the board of the "Harp Vereniging Nederland" and artistic director of the dutch national Rosa Spier Harp Competition.

  • Àlex Garrobé (guitar): Since winning First Price at Fundación Guerrero Guitar Competition and the Musical Youths of Spain Competition, his concert career has quickly developed in more than forty countries performing in some of the most prestigious international halls, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Radio France Auditorium in Paris, Auditorio Nacional (Madrid), Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) or the Lutowslasky Auditorium (Warsaw). As a result of his interest for modern creation and contemporary music Àlex Garrobé has established frequent associations with many composers and premiered several unknown works. Among his many collaborations as a soloist with orchestra are the premieres of the Mare Nostrum Concerto, by Salvador Brotons, …di un soffio d’aura, by Agustín Charles and the Concierto de Petrer by Simone Iannarelli. PhD on Art History and Musicolgy by the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Àlex Garrobé has been professor at Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco (MUSIKENE), Escola de Música de Barcelona-Universitat Autónoma, and the Catalan Music College (ESMUC) where he currently holds the professorship in guitar and chamber music. His teaching has produced several first-prize winners in international competitions. He has presented master classes in Bolivia, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, México, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. He has released six CDs on the labels Harmonia Mundi, Opera Tres and Columna Musica. After listening to his CD dedicated to British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold expressed the opinion that it was: "A masterly interpretation", to which he added "It is gratifying to hear one’s music played so superbly".

  • Otto Tolonen (guitar) is one of the most versatile and active classical guitarists of his generation. He is constantly searching for new repertoire and experimenting with new concert forms and techniques. Otto Tolonen studied at the Sibelius Academy from the Junior Academy to the DocMus Doctoral School with Jukka Savijoki and Timo Korhonen. Studies with Raphaella Smits in Belgium, Thomas Müller-Pering and Jürgen Ruck in Germany and Oscar Ghiglia in Italy complete his musical education. Tolonen is active as a soloist, chamber musician and lecturer throughout Europe, America and Japan. He has held professorships in Oslo since 2018 and in Lübeck since 2019. He is proficient in a wide range of musical styles. He sets the highest standards of quality in his choice of repertoire: The dense polyphony of John Dowland's chromatic fantasies, the complex spectral modulations in Tristan Murail's Tellur and the French sound refinement of Georges Migot and Gustave Samazeuihl are just a few examples. He has won prizes in 20 international competitions. His latest portrait album "Retratos" (2018) was described as "legendary" in Finland's largest daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. In addition, Otto Tolonen devotes himself to current research approaches to European guitar music and musical styles from the second half of the 20th century.
