Flute Intermezzo

The MHL invites advanced students to the second "Flötenintermezzo" in Große Petersgrube on Saturday, 13 November 2021 from 11 am to 4.30 pm. On the programme: individual and ensemble lessons, playing in a flute ensemble, various workshops around flute playing and a flute exhibition. After a joint warm-up, participants will receive individual or group lessons from MHL lecturers and flutists of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

The offer is aimed at advanced students aged 12 to 18. Participation is possible individually or as an existing ensemble. The minimum requirement is a piece with a level of difficulty comparable to one movement of a Handel sonata. After a joint warm-up, participants will receive individual or group lessons with Prof. Angela Firkins (MHL). The lessons are not open to the public. The participants' teachers are cordially invited to attend the lesson. Parallel to the lessons, the ensemble pieces sent out in advance for the internal final event and flute-specific topics will be worked on in small workshops. There will also be enough time to visit the flute exhibition.

Registration
The registration fee is 20 euros per participant. Registrations are now possible by mail to netzwerk-floete@remove-this.mh-luebeck.de. Information on the prepared piece for the lesson can be submitted later. The closing date for registration is 30 October 2021.

Lecturers

Prof. Angela Firkins, born Tetzlaff, grew up in Hamburg in a musical family and thus discovered her love of music at an early age. She studied with professors Jean-Claude Gérard (Hamburg), William Bennett (Freiburg) and Paul Meisen (Munich). After several first prizes in the Jugend musiziert competition, she won a prize at the German Music Competition in 1985 and 1st prize at the German University Competition in 1986. Since its foundation in 1978, Angela Firkins has been a member of the Albert Schweitzer Quintet, which - among many other awards - was a prize-winner at the ARD Competition (1985) and received the Annual Prize of the German Record Critics in 1989 with its complete recording of Anton Reicha's wind quintets. After being a member of the Federal Youth Orchestra, the Young German Philharmonic Orchestra and the European Community Youth Orchestra for many years, she became principal flute of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1993 and principal flute of the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover in 1994. Since 1997 she has led a successful flute class as a professor at the MHL and regularly participates as a lecturer in chamber music and master classes and as a juror in competitions. An international concert activity in various chamber music ensembles complements her commitment at the university.

Melanie Klinke completed the two degree programmes Music Education and Artistic Training at the MHL and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris. From the beginning, her focus was on pedagogical work. She has been teaching students of all ages for over 15 years. She has played in numerous selection orchestras and during various internships and temporary jobs in professional orchestras. The instrumental teacher teaches at the Herzogtum Lauenburg District Music School as well as privately in the Lübeck area and is a lecturer for flute didactics and woodwind didactics at the MHL. Since last year, she has been the representative for digital development at the music school and is involved with the use of digital aids in teaching.

Thomas Biermann was born in Bielefeld and studied flute with Felix Manz as well as music theory in Basel and completed his concert exam with Paul Meisen in Munich. He gained his first orchestral experience in the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the "Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival" and the "Junge Deutsche Philharmonie". He was flutist at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and since 1996 has been 1st solo flutist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and lecturer for flute at the University of Music Lübeck. In addition, he is active as a teacher and as a long-standing lecturer at chamber music courses of the "Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland" in Weikersheim and at the Schleswig-Holstein State Youth Orchestra.

Waldo Ceunen was born in Beringen, Belgium, where he began playing the flute at the age of 9 at the municipal music school. He studied in Brussels with Carlos Bruneel, in Lübeck with Angela Firkins, in Hamburg with Jürgen Franz and in Weimar with Wally Hase. He began his orchestral career as a trainee with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, followed by a temporary contract with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Since 2008 he has been deputy principal flute of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. He has also played as a substitute in renowned orchestras such as the NDR Elbphilharmonieorchester in Hamburg, the "Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest" in Amsterdam and the "Symfonieorkest van de Munt" in Brussels. In addition, he has been a lecturer at the Academy of the Hamburg Conservatory since 2011. There he prepares students in the main subject flute for entrance examinations and also accompanies them on their way to the final examination within the framework of the Diploma in Music Education, the Artistic Maturity and the Postgraduate Studies.
