Blick auf einen Stapel Noten Neuer Musik

Musicology, dealing with researching music as well as music-making in past and present, is an important aspect of all courses at the MHL. Musicological research finds entrance into teaching and is closely connected to the artistic practice. The MHL also provides the opportunity to do a doctorate in musicology.

At the MHL, the subject of musicology is currently taught by Prof. Dr. Christiane Tewinkel. Courses and seminars on popular music are taught by Prof. Bernd Ruf. Both research and teaching focuses on characters such as Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann in their respective historical contexts and their music. It also centres on the performance practice in the 19th century, the transatlantic relationships in music, music criticism and teaching as well as the history of science. The courses offered are enhanced by the allocation of further lectureships for music ethnology, media science and systematic musicology.
