»›You play exactly as if you came from America.‹ Transatlantic relationships and anti-American prejudices in the music scene of the German Empire and the monarchy of Austria-Hungary 1880-1915» 

(April 2022 to September 2024) 

The goal of the research project directed by Prof. Dr. Christiane Tewinkel and executed by Dr. Marten Noorduin is to examine the American grand tours in German speaking countres between 1880 and 1915. It also focuses on visualising the transatlantic networks surrounding teachers such as Franz Liszt (Weimar) and Theodor Leschetizky (Wien), on the basis of which they aim to shine a spotlight on music-related dialogue in German speaking countries that addressed anti-American prejudices.

In recent years, the MHL has frequently hosted symposia documented in publications. We plan to host further conferences and congresses.

The focus of the lecture series is the dynamic between promotion of the elite and a broad-ranging musical education. Lectures and discussions introduce perspectives from educational sciences, music education, choral culture, instrument training and competitions, the PR, Marketing and orchestral management as well as higher education policy.
