Buxtehude Organ Competition

Final round
to be played on the organs of St. Jakobi Church, Lübeck (Stellwagen-Organ, Richborn-Positiv and the Large Organ)

  • Free selection of a 50 minute programme appropriate to the organs with works of Dieterich Buxtehude and the north German organ school, Johann Sebastian Bach as well as one contemporary work, composed after 2000. The selection of the organs is left up to the participant. The use of at least two organs is mandatory.

Conditions
Application documents
The International Buxtehude Organ Competition will take place from September 21st - 29th, 2018 in Lübeck and Hamburg, Germany. The following application documents are required for registration:

  • completed application form
  • copy of passport
  • examination certificates of musical education (copies)
  • musical curriculum vitae
  • photograph of the performer (9 x 13 cm)

Application deadline May 1st, 2018 (date of the postmark)

Admission and fee
A maximum of 15 competitors who were born after January 1st, 1986 will be admitted to the competition. The applicants will be informed by June 1st, 2018 if their application has been successful and this admission approval will be accompanied by the necessary information regarding payment formalities. The participation fee is 50 Euros and must be paid in full by June 15th, 2018 following admission to the competition.

Procedure
For successful applicants the competition is comprised of three rounds. The first round will take place in St. Jakobi Church in Lübeck, the second in St. Katharinen Church in Hamburg and St. Jacobi Church in Hamburg and the final round once again in St. Jakobi Church in Lübeck. All the rounds are open to the public. The competition may be broadcast on radio and television and photographed by the press. Regarding such instances, the performers have no claim to any fees or rights.

Prizes

  • 1st prize 8.000 Euros
  • 2nd prize 5.000 Euros
  • 3rd prize 3.000 Euros.

Each finalist will receive a "Finalist's Diploma". The jury is not obliged to award prizes. The prizes cannot be shared, but may be awarded to two participants. The decisions of the jury are final.

Registrants
Participants who request a registrant for the competition will be provided one. It is equally permissible to bring a registrant to the competition.

Accommodation
For competitors who have reached the second round, accommodation will be provided free of charge for the duration of their participation in the competition.
