Dream job as a music teacher

Study "Music Education" at the MHL: Apply now and study tomorrow
The "Music Education" degree programmes offer a diverse, individually customisable education that combines theory and practice with many options for young music enthusiasts who see their future career in musical work with people. Whether in schools, music schools or other contexts of music education, the "Music Education" degree programme qualifies students for a career as a music teacher at secondary schools as well as for other degrees such as instrumental and vocal pedagogy and elementary music education. In addition to the classic second subject option in conjunction with the University of Lübeck or the University of Hamburg, it also offers the opportunity to specialise (popular music, elementary music pedagogy, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, performing arts and much more) as part of a double degree course.

New: From the winter semester 2023/24, Digital Creation can be studied as a major artistic subject in the Bachelor of Arts. More information here.

We look forward to welcoming many prospective students who would like to study "Music Mediation" in the Bachelor of Arts or Master of Education (also lateral entry) and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the application process.

bachelor of arts

The eight-semester Bachelor of Arts programme "Music Education" is aimed at applicants who wish to study music as a teaching profession with a second subject or music as a double subject. During the programme, artistic, pedagogical and scientific competences are acquired in a practice-oriented manner. With the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Master of Education "Music Education" can be studied as a prerequisite for a teacher traineeship at grammar schools.

Version 1: Wit a second subject
In the second subject option, a further teaching subject is studied at a cooperating university:

Version 2: Musci as a double subject
With the double-subject variant, a profile is chosen at the MHL which deals with musical skills in depth and in some cases enables additional professional qualifications. The following profiles are offered:

Course contents
The Bachelor of Arts programme "Music Education" offers a wide-ranging artistic, music pedagogical and musicological education and is characterised by close networking of the individual subject areas as well as practical relevance.

In addition to the main artistic subject, students are trained in applied piano playing, classical singing, pop singing and the playing of other optional instruments. In various events on school music-making practice, music-making with many different school instruments is practically tested and arranging for variable instrumentations is learned. The choir and orchestra conducting classes train students to lead groups. Improvisation, ensemble and chamber music, big band, chamber choir and university choir offer versatile opportunities to try out making music together with students from other degree programmes. Other offers such as acting, physical training, dance and foreign languages round off the programme.

Music education and educational science are an integral part of the degree programme and are deepened in seminars at the MHL as well as in inter-university programmes. Theoretical, scientific and practical music content is directly related to teaching. Internships are directly integrated into the study structure in the Bachelor's and also in the Master's programme and are prepared and accompanied in special seminars. In self-developed interdisciplinary projects inside and outside the university, students apply their specialist knowledge independently. The study programme is enriched by international excursions.

Students acquire sound specialist knowledge in the areas of classical and popular music. In small groups they receive lessons in music theory and ear training and deal with topics in musicology in lectures and seminars. Here they learn the basics that enable them to work independently and teach on the basis of musicology.

Study schedules
There are four study schedules depending on the main focus chosen (singing / pop singing / piano / all other instruments). The study schedules provides information on the courses to be taken within the modules as well as the number of semester hours per teaching unit. Module descriptions with further information such as examination modalities can be accessed there via the blue "Info Button".
