Master of "Musical Practice, Music Pedagogy, Popular Music"
The degree programme is designed for candidate students who wish to follow up a classical/practical music degree focussing on instrumental and/or vocal education with an additional qualification and thereby consolidate their artistic skills.
Given that students have already completed a classical study programme, the technical and musical abilities in respect of instrumental and/or vocal performance obtained in the bachelor degree allow the focus to centre on the concentrated and effective learning of popular music stylistics.
In this respect, the term popular music relates to its broad spectrum encompassing pop and rock music, jazz, electro and world music together with the associated subgenres. The curriculum enables the acquisition of stylistic diversity as a basic competence, but additionally offers an optionally more profiled contextual orientation within one of the respective fields. Overall, the curriculum comprises a comprehensive popular music training programme that delivers artistic, theoretical and academic courses. Working as part of an ensemble is a primary feature of popular music performance. Consequently, instrumental and vocal performance in an ensemble and the commensurate ensemble direction are afforded the necessary consideration within the curriculum.
With this degree programme, the University of Music Lübeck is offering a contemporary response to the requirements of instrumental and vocal training that, due to increasing pop-cultural orientation within society as a whole, necessitates an expansion of contextual knowledge. Instrumental or vocal music educators with both classical and popular music training have significantly better employment and occupational opportunities than teachers with purely classical training.
