The Master of Music Accompaniment programme is aimed at prospective students who already have experience as duo and chamber music partners. They should have developed excellent technical and musical skills during their bachelor's degree. Self-reflection on sound and the ability to immediately absorb and respond to partners are essential prerequisites for the programme, as is the most complete mastery possible of rhythm, dynamics, articulation and phrasing. Sight-reading skills should already be highly developed.
The programme serves to build and complete a standard repertoire in the areas of strings, wind instruments and voice. The repertoire includes playing duo sonatas as well as piano reductions of instrumental solo concert and opera literature and the song duo repertoire.
The programme requires a love of communication, an interest in other instruments, in singing and in other performing musicians with whom students will rehearse and perform. All these qualities are fostered in practice through participation in many different ensembles throughout the duration of the programme. Starting from an existing basic repertoire, this is constantly expanded and extended to other instruments. This includes extensive observation of other lecturers' classes and lessons in order to learn as much as possible about the specific difficulties involved in playing a string or wind instrument or singing. This is followed by performances in class evenings and/or other concerts.
Playing in a chamber music group of three or more musicians is part of the training.
It is particularly important to be able to distinguish between the pianistic partnership requirements of working with a singer, a string player or a wind player and to be able to respond to the different needs of a partner.
