bachelor of arts

The program "Teaching Music" with a Bachelor of Arts degree is comprised of 8 semesters and prepares students for different careers within and outside of the school. It ranges from elementary music education, concert pedagogy, music school, church music, dramaturgical and journalistic activities to teaching positions at high schools. With a view to later teaching at a school, students have a choice: either to study a second subject at the University of Hamburg, or to opt for a profile at MHL. This profile opens up professional fields outside the school or leads to the two-subject model in the teaching profession. Students can choose from the following profiles:

The teaching aspect is in the foreground of this Bachelor of Arts. The experience of personal artistic development is the substantial precondition for conveying music to a variety of groups in its range of shapes and forms. The program thrives on the hands-on interaction of educational, scientific and artistic disciplines. Individual and group lessons, ensembles, placements and projects are teaching methods that promote the individual talents of students and foster general skills: across music genres – from early to contemporary music, jazz, world music to pop. Regardless of the selection of a second subject of a profile, all graduates of the program "Teaching Music"  / Bachelor of Arts fulfill the formal requirements of a degree as Music Teacher / Master of Education.

Qualification objective according to accreditation:
The program "Teaching Music" with the degrees Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education prepares for different professions within and outside the school: from the elementary music industry to concert education, music school, church music, dramatic and journalistic activities to teaching at high schools.

The  qualification objectives include:

  • The ability to assess lessons learned while studying as to their benefit to artistic development and apply this to selected areas (choir, orchestra, music class, etc.),
  • The ability to analyze the complex system of educational, scientific and artistic work areas for academic and extracurricular learning situations and initiate appropriate strategies for music-related work,
  • The ability to work genre-oriented and adequately while acquiring key skills to promote competence, media skills, methodological competence, self-competence (human competence) and social skills.
